Biography

Dr. Stuart B. Carter is a board-certified comprehensive ophthalmologist. He earned his bachelor’s degree with honors in molecular biology and neuroscience from Princeton University. He then went on to earn his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. Dr. Carter completed his internship in internal medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan before completing his ophthalmology residency at New York University Medical Center. After his residency, Dr. Carter undertook additional fellowship training in corneal diseases, cataract surgery, and refractive surgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Throughout his training and research, Dr. Carter has received numerous honors, including the Hurwitz Memorial Prize in Ophthalmology, the Elkins Senior Thesis Prize in Molecular Biology, and the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research Fellowship Award. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He has been inducted into the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society and recognized by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the National Merit Scholarship Program.

At OCLI, Dr. Carter specializes in routine and complex cataract surgery with implantation of advanced intraocular lenses, laser surgery, and the treatment of corneal and ocular surface disease.

Dr. Carter’s publications include “Development of Herpes Simplex Virus Epithelial Keratitis During Oral Acyclovir Therapy and Response to Topical Antivirals,” with E.J. Cohen, in Cornea; “The Role of Orbital Ultrasonography in Distinguishing Papilledema from Pseudopapilledema,” with M. Pistilli, K.G. Livingston, et. al, in Eye; and “Relationship Between Optic Nerve Appearance and Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness as Explored with Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography” in Translational Vision Science & Technology, with T.S. Aleman, J. Huang, S.T. Garrity, et al.
